I am Geng. I was born in 1972 in a small village in Shaanxi. When I was three years old, I burnt my left leg accidentally over the coal fire. To prevent infection the doctor amputated the bottom half of my leg which caused my permanent disability. I have been on crutches ever since.
In the 1980s the Gospel of Jesus Christ came to our remote mountain village. My mother Li was one of the first people who came to the Lord. Since Mum became a Christian, she prayed with all her heart for us and told us about God.
My father, a government official, did not like my mother’s faith. He often beat her or cursed her, even spit on her face. And he did not stop there. Sometimes he even hurled insults at Jesus. But my Mum did not retaliate, neither did she show anger or complain. Instead she loved us and blessed those who persecuted her because she had the life and strength of Jesus Christ in her.
I am ashamed to admit that as we were growing up my brother and I ridiculed Mum and her faith too. We were enemies of Jesus and servants of sin. I used to watch a lot of Gongfu movies and videos and was affected with revenge, envy, coldness, and bitterness rather than love and acceptance of others.
In 1987 during the coldest month of the year, Mum was taken to heaven by the Lord. She was only 49 years old. After her death my brother and father fought all the time. Both of them went their separate ways and I was left on my own.
A year later as I was tuning the radio to listen to what was on, I came across the AM1566 Gospel programme. I was feeling weak and hopeless and wanted to take some sleeping pills to kill myself. Listening to the radio that day, I heard somebody called Pastor Ye Guang Ming (the Chinese name of Derek Prince, meaning Clear Light) talking about a paralysed person walking again and giving thanks to Jesus.
I was so inspired, as I was just like that paralysed person, searching for new hope and salvation. On that day I saw for the first time the light of God’s love in the dark valley of death. I gave my life to the powerful risen Saviour Jesus Christ. So, I kept on listening to the radio programmes to learn more about my Saviour. And I joined a church too.
My dear, faithful Mum gave me the Gospel early on in my life. The seed of God’s Word grew in me. Over the years, by listening to the Gospel programme and studying God’s Word, I have become a faithful believer and my life turned 180 degrees.
Jesus Christ is the most glorious thing I have in my life. He chose me and set me free from the power of darkness, sin and death. I want to grow as a Christian and I am eager to spread the Gospel of Jesus.
